Day 10: en-route to Tokyo - Shinjuku

Updated: Sep 6, 2019

We had booked in advance our tickets to go to Tokyo. It took us about ~4.5 hours in total with a limited express train to Nagoya (about 2 hours+) to start with and then a JR train to Nagoya (about 2 hours). We arrived to Tokyo in the afternoon. For our first afternoon and evening in Tokyo, we decided to stay in the area around the hotel (Shinjuku).

First, we checked-in at Super Hotel Shinjuku Kabukicho. The hotel was fine overall. The room was extremely small, but clean and very well located. The priced was around ~100 pounds per night. We spent in total 6 nights in this hotel.

We started with a 15-min walk to the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

Then, we walked through the area towards the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building with its two observatories (200 meters). Both observatories were open that day but we picked one of them randomly, the North one. Note that the observatories are free and give you a very good view over Tokyo. However, you can expect a long wait time. That day, were were lucky, after 15min wait or so, we were on the top of the building. Note that you could also decide to go for the Tokyo Tower (250 meters, ~21 pounds) and Tokyo Skytree (up to 450 meters, from ~23 pounds depending on the package/day), which we made the choice not to visit.

On our way back to the hotel's area, we could admire the show of the Shinjuku screens, that's very impressive!

We ended up having dinner in a random restaurant where the employees were hardly speaking English. It was a steak house and the beef was great!
