[Crete]: Day 9 Chania

After a few relaxing days in Elafonissi, we headed back North towards Chania (about 1h30 drive), the second city of the island. Chania also called Hania or La Canée in French, is located on the North coast of Crete and is specifically known for its pretty Venetian harbour. One of the characteristics of the town is that there is an old and a modern city and is divided into quarters according to the period they were built and the people that lived in. There is a real mix of culture between the Byzantine walls and the Jewish quarter.

Once arrived in Chania, we started with our PCR covid test at Iasis Hospital (very easy). Then, we checked in at our hotel called 'Balance Hotel' (1 Saratsoglou, Chania, 73131) that I highly recommend! Brand-new hotel located 5-10 mins walk from the Venetian harbour, spacious, very modern, affordable (~80 pounds/night) and very welcoming staff! They also do free bike-renting. They booked our day trip to Samaria Gorge for us.

The hotel gave us some nice "personal" recommendations in terms of hotels and places to get a drink. We went to one of them called 'La Bodega' for lunch, located in the Venetian Harbor. It was very nice and what a view! Later in the day, we also got a drink next to it in a café/terrace called 'Corner of Angels'.

There is a lot to explore in the city... the Venetian fortifications, the Grand Arsenal, the Lighthouse, the Mosque as well as the various quarters I was mentioning before... I would encourage you to get lost and explore the multiple charming streets of the old town!

For dinner, we went to a typical tavern called 'Adespoto Music Taverna' giving some live music performance. It was good and very entertaining! In 2012, Adespoto was one of the filming locations for major film production "The Two Faces of January".

I would allocate between 0.5 to a full day in Chania.
